Mittwoch, 02.09.2009 6. Tag: Shap - Kirkby StephenDies ist die längste Etappe unserer Wanderung. Viele Wanderer unterteilen diesen Tag, auch wenn das nicht so einfach ist, denn die Anzahl Ortschaften unterwegs ist sehr begrenzt. Orton wäre ein Kandidat für eine Übernachtung. Die Länge der Etappe und somit die Kondition ist die einzige Schwierigkeit dieses Tages. Man ist einfach ewig unterwegs, ein sehr langer Tag halt, vorausgesetzt die Beine machen mit.

Der Lonely Planet-Führer "Walking in Britain" ist der Meinung, dass dieser Tag landschaftlich uninteressant ist. Es gibt natürlich keine Berge zu besteigen, aber ich finde, dass dieser Tag landschaftlich den anderen in nichts nachsteht. Man durchwandert zwar viele landwirtschaftlich genutzte Gebiete, aber diese wird nie intensiv betrieben. Man sieht viel frei laufende Schafe (und Hasen), streift kleine Weiler und quert mehrere Moore. Die Schönheit liegt hier im Detail, man muss einfach die Augen offen halten. In der Ferne sieht man schon bald die Berge der Pennines, wo am nächsten Tag der Yorkshire Dales Nationalpark beginnen wird.

Gleich nach Shap muss man die M6 auf einer Brücke überqueren, danach folgt eine Kiesgrube, bevor man die kleine Ortschaft Oddendale streift. Ab hier geht der Weg stundenlang über Hügel und Moore. Es ist nicht immer einfach, den richtigen Weg zu finden, doch irgendwie geht es doch auf. Zeitweise hat es sogar Wegweiser. Robin Hood's Grave haben wir allerdings nicht gefunden. Wahrscheinlich ist damit der ganze Hügel gemeint. Irgendwann trifft man schliesslich auf eine Landstrasse, der man rund einen Kilometer lang folgt, bevor die B6260 gequert werden muss.

Scar Side, Friar Biggins und Scarside sind eigentlich nur Bauernhöfe. Scarside scheint aber ziemlich dämonisch zu sein, da werden tote Ratten am Schwanz an den Zaun gebunden. Komische Sitten jedenfalls. Danach sind wir der B6261 gefolgt, denn die Wiesen, über die der Coast-To-Coast eigentlich gehen würde, waren extrem durchnässt, eher Sumpf als Weg. Die Strasse ist kaum befahren. In Raisbeck haben wir kurz zu Mittag gegessen, bevor der Regen einsetzte. Glücklicherweise nur für kurze Zeit.

Das nächste Stück führt durch das Ravenstonedale Moor. Anfangs ist es ganz einfach, den Weg zu finden, als wir aber schliesslich auf die kleine Strasse trafen, der man für rund 100 Meter folgen muss, waren wir doch nicht ganz sicher, ob es nach rechts oder links geht. Glücklicherweise kam gerade ein Radfahrer, der sich auskannte. Und: Wir waren genau da, wo wir sein sollten, also ging es nach links. Jetzt geht es nochmals durch landwirtschaftliches Land, zuerst einige Kilometer einer Steinmauer folgend bis zum Begin Hill, wo man wieder die ganze Höhe verliert, um den Scandal Beck zu queren.

Um die letzten Hügel vor Kirkby Stephen zu überqueren, muss man gleich nach der Querung des Baches wieder aufsteigen. Jetzt merkt man die Beine schon ein bisschen, schliesslich ist man seit mehr als sechs Stunden unterwegs. So scheint der Weg über das Smardale Fell recht lange, und als man schliesslich den Zielort sieht, geht es noch immer drei Kilometer weit. Nach der Ankunft in Kirkby Stephen bleibt dann nicht mehr so viel Zeit, um sich die Kleinstadt anzusehen, bevor die Sonne untergeht. Dafür ist hier die Auswahl an Restaurants mal richtig gross. Ach übrigens: Dies war der einzige Tag, an dem wir nicht vor, aber genau gleichzeitig mit unserem Gepäck ankamen. Kirkby Stephen ist die Basis von Coast-To-Coast Packhorse und deshalb die letzte Station auf dem Weg von St.Bees.

This is the longest day of our hike. Many hikers split it into two days, although this is not so easy because there are only few villages along this section. Orton might be a candidate for an overnight stay. The length of the day and with that your shape is the limiting factor of the day. You are just walking for a very long time, seemingly never ending, hoping the legs won't collapse.

The guide book "Walking in Britain" by Lonely Planet says that this day is not interesting at all. True is that after the Lake Districts there are no mountains left to be climbed, but I think that is day is no less interesting than the other days. There are many farms to cross, but that areas are not cultivated intensively. There are lots of sheep (and rabbits), you come along pretty hamlets and cross a few moors. So the beauty lies in the details, just open your eyes and take it in. After a while, at the horizon you can see the hills of the Pennines that we are going to cross the next day within Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Just out of Shap there is a foot bridge crossing M6, followed by a gravel pit you have to walk along before reaching the village of Oddendale. Starting here the trail passes over hills and through moors for several hours. It is not always easy finding the right trail, but somehow it worked out. Sometimes there are signs. But we could not find Robin Hood's Grave. Probably it is just the name of the hill we were walking along. Later you reach a country road that you have to follow for about one kilometer before crossing B6260.

Scar Side, Friar Biggins and Scarside are not more than farmhouses. There seems to be something daemonic about Scarside as there are dead rats bound with their tails to the fences. Quite strange view. After that we followed B6261 because the meadows the Coast-To-Coast originally passes were very wet, actually boggy. There are hardly any cars driving that street. We stopped in Raisbeck for a short lunch, just before it started raining. Fortunately that was only a short shower. 
Scandal Beck
The next section crosses through Ravenstonedale Moor. At the beginning it is very easy to find the right trail, but when we finally reached the small road at the end of the moor that has to be followed for about 100 meters, we were not really sure whether we had to go to the left or the right. So we were happy that a cyclist was just comming around the corner and that he was a local. And: We were exatly where we should have been, so the trail was going to the left as marked on the map. There is more farm land to be walked, first along a stone wall for a few kilometers, to Begin Hill after which you are loosing all the height to cross Scandal Beck. 
Smardale Fell
In order to go over the final hills before reaching Kirkby Stephen you have to climb again just after having crossed the beck. Here you will definitely start feeling your legs as you have been walking for more than six hours. That is why you might feel that the section over Smardale Fell is much longer than the map might say. And when you can finally see the destination there are still three kilometers to be done. Having arrived in Kirkby Stephen there is not much time left for strolling before sunset. But the choice of restaurants is very good here. By the way: This was the only day when we did not arrive before, but just at the same time as our luggage. Kirkby Stephen is the home base of Coast-To-Coast Packhorse and by that the last station on their way from St.Bees.
