Dienstag, 01.09.2009 5. Tag: Patterdale - ShapDie fünfte Etappe geht über den höchsten Berg entlang dem Coast-To-Coast Trail, den Kidsty Pike. Wegen der Wettersituation und dem am Vortag erlebten haben wir Ian vom Bed & Breakfast, Bergführer im Nebenberuf, gefragt, was er davon hält, diese Etappe in Angriff zu nehmen. Er meinte, dass wir auf dieselben Probleme treffen würden, der Tag sei aber viel länger. Er empfahl uns und den anderen Wanderern, stattdessen das Schiff von Glenridding nach Pooley Bridge zu nehmen und von dort die Flachlandroute nach Shap zu wandern. Wir haben diesen Vorschlag angenommen, ihm die entsprechende Landeskarte abgekauft und uns auf den Weg Richtung Glenridding gemacht.

The fifth day of the Coast-To-Coast trail goes over the highest mountain along the trail, called Kidsty Pike. Because of the weather conditions and what we had experienced the day before we asked Ian from the bed & breakfast (who is a mountain guide) what he were thinking about doing that section of the trail. His answer was that it would be about the same as the day before, just double as long. He recommended that we and the other hikers take the steam boeat from Glenridding to Pooley Bridge and hike from there along a low level route to Shap. We agreed, bought the corresponding map from him and started walking to Glenridding. | ||||||||||

Das Schiff (Ullswater Steamers) fährt in Glenridding, dem Nachbarort von Patterdale. Dort mussten wir allerdings erfahren, dass dies nicht möglich war, denn der Wasserstand war zu hoch, um in Pooley Bridge zu landen. Also mussten wir stattdessen den Bus dorthin nehmen, was zwar viel rascher geht, aber nicht so schön ist. Die Wanderung folgt der dritten Etappe des siebentägigen Westmoorland Way (von Appleby nach Arnside), allerdings in umgekehrter Richtung. Sie wird auch im Buch "A Coast To Coast Walk" von Alfred Wainwright als Schlechtwetter-Alternative kurz erwähnt. 
Ab Pooley Bridge führt der Weg zuerst ein wenig ansteigend auf eine Hochebene, wo man ein Moor durchqueren muss. Der Weg ist allerdings auch bei nassen Bedingungen problemlos zu begehen. Hier hatten wir plötzlich Begleitung eines Hundes, der seiner Besitzerin davongelaufen war. Glücklicherweise wanderten wir eine halbe Stunde lang genau auf sie zu und konnten ihn übergeben. Danach führt der Weg mehrheitlich entlang von kaum befahrenen Landstrassen über Butterwick, Bampton und Rosgil nach Shap. Kurz vor Shap kann man einen kleinen Abstecher zur Shap Abbey machen, der sich allerdings kaum lohnt. 
Shap ist ein ziemlich grosser Ort, wo man mehrere Läden und Pubs findet. Unser Bed & Breakfast lag ganz am südlichen Ende der Ortschaft, was uns dann irgendwann etwas unsicher machte, ob wir noch der richtigen Strasse folgten. Die Navigation war aber wie immer perfekt und wir erreichten schliesslich das gesuchte Haus. Dort wurden wir gleich mit Tee und Butter Scones begrüsst. Erst viel später, kurz vor dem Eindunkeln, kam dann auch noch ein Paar an, das den Weg über den Kidsty Pike gewagt hatte. Deren Erzählungen tönten wie erwartet überhaupt nicht so, als hätten sie auch nur ein bisschen Spass gehabt.

But there we were told that it was not possible to run the boat because the water level was too high to land in Pooley Bridge. So instead of the boat we had to take the bus. This ist much faster, but not as pretty considering the view. The trail follows the third day of the seven day longdistance walk Westmoorland Way (from Appleby to Arnside), but in opposite direction. Alfred Wainwright mentions this hike in his book "A Coast To Coast Walk" as a bad weather alternative route. 
Shap Abbey
From Pooley Bridge the trail ascends slowly to a high plain where you have to cross a moor. The trail is easy walking, even in wet conditions. Here we suddenly had company of a dog who had run away from his owner. Fortunately we were hiking towards her for about half an hour, so we could re-unite them. After leaving the moor the trail mainly follows rural roads with very little traffic, via Butterwick, Bampton and Rosgil to Shap. Little before Shap there is a small detour to Shap Abbey, but we think it was not really worth it. Shap is quite a large village with several shops and pubs. Our bed & breakfast was at the very southern end of Shap. Walking along the street we finally were not so sure anymore if we were on the right way. But navigation was absolutely precise as always, and finally we reached the wanted house. There we were welcomed with tea and butter scones. Only much later, just before sunset, another cuple arrived who had done the way over Kidsty Pike. Their story did not sound very good, as expected they had not had any fun that day.
