Montag, 31.08.2009 4. Tag: Grasmere - PatterdaleWir hatten die von Alfred Wainwright beschriebene Etappe in zwei Teile unterteilt, um an diesem Tag den Helvellyn zu besteigen. Dass das auch diesmal nicht möglich sein würde - oder zumindest kein Spass wäre - konnten wir bereits vor dem Loslaufen entscheiden. Leichter Regen begleitete uns von Grasmere bis nach Mill Bridge. Danach wurde es vorerst trocken, was ganz angenehm war für den Anstieg. So blieb es aber nicht lange. Die Kaputze hatten wir für den Rest des Tages auf dem Kopf, die Kamera leider meistens im Rucksack. Deshalb gibt es von diesem Tag leider nicht viel mehr Bilder als hier gezeigt.

Der Aufstieg zum Grisedale ist angenehm steil. Etwa ab der Mitte gibt es zwei Varianten, auf beiden Seiten des Great Tongue. Wir entschieden uns für den Original-Weg auf der rechten Seite. Der Weg war durchgehend ein Bach, denn das Wasser drückte überall aus dem Berg. Kurz bevor die beiden Varianten wieder zusammenkommen, gibt es einen Bach unterhalb eines Wasserfalls, der uns das erste Mal an diesem Tag das Leben schwer machte: Der Wasserstand war so hoch, dass es unmögich war, ihn zu durchwaten. Also stiefelten wir rauf und runter, bis wir eine Stelle gefunden hatten, wo wir mit einem zwei Meter weiten Sprung auf die andere Seite kommen konnten. Danach ging es etwas steiler hinauf bis auf die Passhöhe.

Auf dem Pass steckten wir mitten in den Wolken, die Sicht war etwa zehn Meter, gerade genug, um dem klaren Weg sicher zu folgen. Wir waren aber doch überrascht, als wir plötzlich auf der linken Seite den Grisedale Tarn sahen: Dieser kleine See hatte beim starken Sturm Wellen wie der Ozean! Dieser Sturm machte uns dann zusammen mit dem Ausfluss des Sees das Leben zum zweiten Mal schwer: Auf den Steinen, die selber bereits unter dem Wasser waren, konnte man bei vielleicht 100 km/h Wind niemals über den Bach balancieren. Also wieder die Suche nach einer Stelle, wo man darüber hinaus springen konnte. Diese fanden wir auf der rechten Seite weiter unten. Dafür waren zwei Sprünge nötig. Der Spass war definitiv vorbei.

Auch auf dem Weg das lange Tal nach Patterdale hinunter machten wir keine Pause. Wir hatten erstens keinen Hunger, zweitens keine Lust, im Regen stehen zu bleiben. Erneut machte uns ein Bach das Leben schwer, diesmal ein Wasserfall, den man nicht überspringen konnte. Also sind wir ihm entlang geklettert, worauf definitiv nichts mehr trocken war ausser dem Inhalt des Rucksacks. Schliesslich erreichten wir Patterdale, wo wir uns in der White Lion Inn wärmten. Danach war es Zeit für eine warme Dusche im Bed & Breakfast, wo wir den Rest des Tages in der Wärme beim Lesen verbrachten.

We had split this section as it was described by Alfred Wainwright into to parts with the intention to do Helvellyn on this day. Already when we started walking this day we could say for sure, that for the second time we could not do that mountain - or at least it would not have been any fun at all. There was little rain from Grasmere to Mill Bridge. After that it even was dry for some time, not so bad for the ascent. But that only was temporary. For the rest of the day we had the hood of the rain coat on our heads, the camera had to stay in the backpack. That is why there are only few pictures of that day, actually just the ones shown here.

Ascending Grisedale is with a comfortable gradient. At about have the distance there are two variations, one on each side of Great Tongue. We decided to take the original trail along the right hand side. The trail was a kind of a beck for the whole time, the water was comming out of the mountain everywhere. Just before the two variations were linking again there is a stream below a waterfall. That stream was the first of this day that showed some problems: It was so deep that it was impossible to wade through. So we walked up and down to find a spot where we could reach the other side by jumping for about two meters. After that adventure the trail became steeper and finally reached the top.

At the pass we were walking in clouds, could only see about ten meters, just enough to safely follow the trail. So we were quite surprised when we could see Grisedale Tarn on the left side: That little lake had waves like the ocean! The stormy winds together with the high water of the outflow of the lake made it difficult again for us: We could not balance over the stones that were visible in the water because the storm was at least 100 km/h. So we had to find another spot where we could jump to the other side. We finally found one to the right, a little down the hill. It took as two jumps, and fun was lost for that day.

We did not stop for a break for the whole way. First we were not hungry and second we did not feel like hanging around in the rain. Another stream provided us difficulties, this time a waterfall that we could not jump over. So we had to climb through it and the last clothes were wet. At least the backpack stayed dry inside. Finally we reached Patterdale where we warmed up in the White Lion Inn. Then it was time to take a hot shower at the bed & breakfast where we spent the rest of the day reading in the warmth.
